Nice but unreliable May 12, 2008

I got my first one from B&H photo over a year ago. It worked fine on our trip to the Galapagos and I was very happy with it. The electrical current in the Galapagos and Ecuador is the same as the US, 110V 60Hz. I like the size as it fits nicely in my camera bag.
However, it died within 30 seconds of plugging it in on my trip to Paris in mid March. I don't know if it was a factor but I plugged it into an outlet in the bathroom of our hotel labeled "for electric shavers only". The LED lit up briefly and then went out. I then tried it in the bedroom outlet. The LED never lit up again.
Luckily, I was able to purchase a universal camera battery charge in a small photo shop in Paris so I got through the week ok. When I got home I purchased this unit from Amazon as the cost is low and I like the form factor. On my next international trip, I will keep the CTA in my camera bag but I will also bring either the Nikon charger or the universal charger I purchased in Paris in my checked luggage as insurance. The new unit has worked fine in my house so far (3 weeks).

This charger seems to work ok, but is not nearly as nice as the OEM version. Its main advantage is that it plugs directly into the wall without requiring a bulky cord and comes with a European adapter plug and car adapter. Unfortunately, the standard plug has plastic molded partially down the two prongs and they won't plug all the way into an outlet. This can cause it to fall out if you are not careful. Also, the battery is not held in position very securely and you can only count on it staying in place if you can plug the adapter in such that the battery hangs down and gravity helps.
