ssd 32gb transcend September 7, 2010 J. arevalo (los angeles) to everybody:
that has bought or is going to buy this product, i cant speak for all of u but i didnt have a problem with installation or features etc... i received the product, i installed it, turned on my laptop, i had my cd xp installation disk, in the cd drive, i also made sure my bios was going to start up on my cd drive with xp disk, and from the the disk fired up, i had no problem installing, my xp sys, i formated the new drive and after that itstarted to install and it was pretty fast im happy with it the drive, its kinda costly but other then that it kicked butt on my reg old HD that would take foreeevvverr.... with a new installation... ughhh
i clocked my boot time from the moment that i pushed the button and the laptop came on till the xp desktop was on display w/icons etc...
now maybe there was still minor programs starting in the background.....but for the moment that i seen visually that there was no movement in the screen thats when i would stop the timer... here are my times
old HD-boot time till all icons were on desktop display-- 1:32secs
new HD-boot time till all icons were on desktop display-- 28-30secs yes i couldnt belive it myself....
old HD-shutdown time 1min
new HD-shutdown time 10secs
now i know that starting and shutting down is little of importance but over all it made my laptop fast and im happy with the results.
i have a old ibm thinkpad w/700mhz processor, 512mb ram, so, its old but i use it for school and getting on line when im there, it does the job.....
i hope my info has been helpfull.. as far as some of u that have had problems well, i hope that u are able to resolve them.....
regards
george....
Great drive September 2, 2010 B. Chua (United States) Despite the negative reviews, I decided to purchase this drive for my 10 year old Apple Powerbook G4 Titanium 500MHz.
I have prior bad experiences with SSD installed with WinXP before. I was never quite happy with the responsiveness of the OS due to frequent and excessive drive accesses. Disabling the HD paging helped but the OS still took its own sweet time relinquishing control after boot up. That was on a HP Netbook 1000 with an internal SSD drive and 2GB RAM, purchased in 2007. Installing Ubuntu solved this problem permanently.
This MLC SSD unit has far better specs than the internal SSD unit in my 2 year old HP 1000. I knew it would suffice. I installed the drive last night in my Powerbook G4 and then Debian 5.0.5. It outperformed the original disk drive, runs completely silent and is a whole lot cooler. Whether it is power efficient still remains to be seen. But I am very pleased.
If you plan on installing any port of Linux, it's a very good choice. If you run WindowsXP, you'll be very disappointed.
Finally a REAL upgrade July 23, 2010 D. Welch (Gilbert, AZ) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It was somewhat disappointing that Transcend did not have more directions about formatting the device. I downloaded the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and bought the Apricorn EZ Gig II hard drive case and mirroring software, and the rest was a breeze. However, it took some stumbling and bumbling to get to that point. The drive is VERY impressive. I have had it for a month. There is a "pause" now and then, and that is the only negative thing I can say about it. My 6 year old Toshiba laptop now boots up faster than a new Sata desktop, and am on the internet in 1:30. A 100 mb Powerpoint opens in a few seconds. No de-fragging, ever. After reading some of the negative reviews, they must be plants by the new computer manufacturers.
SSD PATA - Great replacement for a older HDD May 4, 2010 Zorba (Westlake Village CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bought this to replace the HDD in my Toshiba P-25 NB Computer.
Unfortunately, the unit is bigger than a standard HDD, and does fit in the caddy.
I was able to put it in the computer without the caddy, and it did work OK. (Not the ideal situation).
I did a full format in less than 1 minute (vs 30 minutes for a regular drive).
I then "Cloned" my drive to the SSD with Norton Ghost 2003 which took about 19 Minutes for about 19 Gig's.
VERY FAST boot up time compared to HDD.
Programs like "Word" load almost instantly.
Open Office loads very fast from a SSD.
A friend of mine had a disk crash, so I used a clone of her disk that I had made a few months prior, and loaded it onto the SSD.
The SSD fit in her Caddy, and she is VERY HAPPY with the quite running and quick load of her programs.
Also notes that the heat fan hardly ever turns on anymore because the SSD runs cool.
For people with Desktop computers, I suggest the SILVERSTONE SDP08 3.5 to 2 X 2.5-Inch Bay Converter
http://www.amazon.com/SILVERSTONE-SDP08-3-5-2-5-Inch-Converter/dp/B002BH3Z8E/ref=pd_cp_e_3
I installed a SSD into a couple of desktop computers, and this one will work with Dell computers, the others wont.
Pros: Do not have to "Defrag" a SSD, in fact, it is not recommended that a SSD be defragged at all.
One of the few manufacturers who make a PATA disk for older NB computers.
Cons: Have no idea why they made the main case larger than a standard drive case. May not fit all NB caddies.
Does not fit my Toshiba NB.
Suggestions from a computer Guru: ALWAYS have a "Clone" of your main drive, not just back up data.
"When" your HDD crashes (Not if), you will have a bootable drive to boot and run from.
