5 out of 5 stars Great all-around lens   July 19, 2010
Tal Lev-Ami
Since this lens is significantly more expensive than buying two separate lenses, we had much deliberation before purchasing.
After consulting friends and photographers, the general consensus was:
1. People do not normally switch lenses, and so if we want the full range we need this lens.
2. People who compromised and bought the 18-105 lens, ended up buying this lens after a year or two.
So we decided to go for it. And I'm very happy we did.
I use the full range quite often, even in a normal sized room, for framing a picture to my liking. Sure, you can crop the photo later on, but no one really does that. I have also found the the best portraits are taken from a far, by using the maximum zoom. This blurs the background and makes for an excellent picture. Especially of kids, which is most of my photography.

On the downside, I discovered that with this lens, my camera's built-in flash (D5000), left a shadow when shooting at the widest zoom (below 50-70). This forced me to buy an external flash (Nikon SB-600), which turned out to be an excellent addition. But I was initially disappointed at the shadow, and would have liked to know this in advance.

Yes, it costs more than most entry-level DSLRs, but if you're already making the transition to a heavy DSLR, it's worth the extra effort to get the best lens.

5 out of 5 stars Best Lens for your money!   July 11, 2010

Many other reviews do a very good job at analyzing the details of this lens. I will not spend time duplicating those reviews. This is a great lens for the amateur photographer who needs a good range of distances to take great pictures.

Our situation involved replacing another Nikon lens of a similar range that had one of the three plastic tabs break off from the seating surface of the lens where it connects to the camera body. We were faced with losing the lens for 4-6 weeks, approximately $200 in repair cost, and just getting back the same, poor designed Nikon lens with plastic tabs! So we took the plunge and bought this Nikon lens after going in to our local Ritz camera and seeing how it was constructed and how it would fit on our D90 body. This lens has a metal seating surface with metal tabs so we knew we would not be faced with the same problem.

This lens is a great buy for the price, about 10-15% cheaper at Amazon than buying it in our local camera store!

5 out of 5 stars perfect fit for Nikon D90   July 9, 2010

It took me half year to choose a lens for my camera. I used Sigma 18-200 for NIKON D90 before which works ok but a little bit soft.

Nikon is definitely much better in terms of sharpness and vibrate elimination. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Best All-In-One Lens I've ever used   June 28, 2010

You won't find a better all purpose lens. This is my second one. The first came with my D200 and I bought another for my D70. For a great no BS technical review on this lens and anything photo related check out [...]. Use his links to Amazon and other sellers for great prices. If you want to carry a single lens that will give you both great wide-angle and telephoto shots, this is it; perfect for travel. Great Glass and construction, and a 5 year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Best walk about lens.   June 21, 2010

After trying out this lens as well as the Tamron 18-270mm in the store, I decided on the Nikon 18-200mm VRII. It performed flawlessly throughout its range and was very smooth. I did not notice any lens creep during my trial. The photos are crisp with excellent color reproduction and focus was fast. The Tamron is a good lens, also, but I felt the zoom on it was not as smooth as the Nikon. In fact, it was quite stiff around 80 to 100mm and up. It was harder to get perfectly clear and sharp pictures as well. After practicing awhile, it got easier to use but the Nikon was the best choice for me. I use this lens on my D90 and it is a perfect complement. Now that I have had it and used it at home, here are some observations. If you take pictures indoors or in poorly lit areas and use the included hood in conjunction with the built in flash, you will definitely see vigneting occur. Remember to take the hood off when using the flash and you will not have any problem. This lens produces pretty good bokeh but sometimes it wants to focus on your background instead of your subject. If you have this problem, switch to manual focus or use the focus lock switch. If you are not sure if your backgroung is blurred the way you like, use the depth of field preview button if you have one. All in all, the is a fun lens with a small learning curve. Finally, if you get this or if you have this lens and lens creep becomes an issue, then use the zoom lock switch. This will secure the lens at 18mm during transport or while moving about. As I stated earlier, it is not an issue with mine. I hope you get one and enjoy it as I do.
