I'm a PC tech by trade, so I'm familiar with program glitches. If I didn't know better I'd say ACDSee has code written in so that the program breaks every few years, forcing an upgrade. We had version 5 - then it 'lost' the pictures database of keywords. Since we have thousands of pics, a big deal. No help from the company that actually fixed the problem so we eventually bought a newer version. It worked well for several years, then a few months ago it began giving fatal error messages. After spending a full day searching their help site - I never did find a complete list of numbered error messages - and reloading the program only to be told it already had a later version loaded and quit the install. Yeah, I probably could've poked around in the registry and removed all ACDSee related parts, but why?

So we switched to Google Picassa for a bit, then to IrfanView for a bit. Neither did what we knew ACDSee could easily do, so I broke down and bought the latest. Truly in a bad spot - the program works well and is easy to use. Then it breaks and I'm betting can't be fixed, so we'll end up buying the version 12 or 13. Not happy about that, but until then the program works well to sort and tag massive numbers of pics. For newbies I'd recommend this and previous versions of the program. We are fairly serious picture buffs, and it works well for us. We are looking at other programs, but so far have yet to find a progam with ACDSee v 10 ease of use and abilities. Color us addicted but not happy about it.
